Like a lot of people out there I've got a large DVD collection. I don't like to keep the DVD cases lying around the house though. So I rip them and put them on my server for my own use. This sounds great until you realise that it can be an OVERNIGHT job to rip and compress a movie. Not with my new MacPro and Handbrake though
Handbrake is a free application for ripping a DVD and converting it into an MP4. I've read that it can export to ipod size movies but I'm just using the default 720x400.
I've chosen Vertigo the classic movie coz it's on my desk and people will think I am smart for owning Hitchcock movies.
Setup
well to be honest I didn't do any setup. I installed Handbrake. Ran it. Stuck in the DVD and pressed start.
So...

The first thing that struck me was the speed! Vertigo is a 2 hour movie... 35 minutes! That's insane! It's ripping and compressing the movie at an average of 80+ frames per second.
It's the first time I've seen the MacPro really get to use all of it's CPU's.

Conclusion
Well its a bit of a no brainer. Run the app, stick the CD in bake for half an hour watch movie. It's everything a Mac app should be
. The mp4 file is just over a gig in size and as far as I can see if picture perfect. To add to my amazement: At no point could I hear my MacPro fans, feel any vibrations or heat 8O. The sound hasn't drifted either. Here is a sample frame from the end of the movie where Johnny-o has gone bonkers
This is one of my favourite apps.
End Game
OK, I think vertigo is an awesome movie made by consumate craftsmen. I would never rip any of them off. I own the DVD, I won't distribute my rip or screw anyone. I simply using my fair use rights. So leave me alone please.
