MacOSX, VMWare Fusion and PKR… it works!

UPDATE: I've created a short video to help people with settings for VMWare, DX and PKR.
View the new post here

At long, long, last, with the new VMWare Fusion 1.1 PKR works on my MacPro if I run it in 'min spec' mode (launch it from the start menu). It runs fairly well on my 3.0GHz Mac Pro. I only give one core to VMWare. I didn't stay for long because to be honest I've gone off poker. It even runs in Unity mode so it's doesn't look quite so windows and crap.

Pkr

Congrats to the VMWare guys and I guess congrats to the PKR Guys, maybe they should be offering cash players free copies of VMWare fusion.

I’m having a bit of trouble in here, I’m using a macbook pro, dld the VMWare fusion 1.1, installed win xp sp2, gave th vm 2 virtual cores, 1024 ram, ran it in min spec mode and still it crashes, any ideas?

  2. mark spicer says:

how do u get this pkr to work on my mac!? thanks

  3. dazza says:

@Eduardo The only thing I can suggest is to make sure all your drivers are up to date. Especially graphics card drivers. What type of error did you get when it chrashed?

  4. dazza says:

@mark spicer: All I did was install VMWare, run the bootcamp partition windows xp and run PKR in min spec mode. It worked.

  5. dazza says:

I’ve just test 1.40 of PKR and it ran fine on my MacPro, Leopard, 2Gb, VMWare Fusion 1.1(62573). I’ve only got one CPU devoted to Fusion, I’ve checked the ‘Accelerated 3D graphics’ open in the Virtual Machine->Settings menu, Display section. Other then that I don’t think I’ve done anything special.

  6. Nik says:

just use bootcamp. its the easiest option

  7. RoughEdge says:

I too was able to get PKR running in Fusion.. I have a Mac Pro Quad 2.6 with only 1.5 gb ram..I have Vista installed on Bootcamp, but its a pain in the ass to restart every time. I had a problem for a while where ruuning PKR in a VMware Fusion, that said “unable to create a D3D device” You have to make sure you resolution settings are correct in windows display properties..And must have Directx9 installed.. When i changed the resolution size, it works fine, with no need to play in low detail…

  8. bill drouillard says:

HEY I’m rookie u need to make this a lot easier.I wanna play but looks to comlicated.email me when normal folk can play.

    P.S. I PLAY EVERY DAY.

  9. Ben says:

hello i would like to know if Pkr works on a macbook not pro ?
or should i buy a MB pro ?
    thanks

  10. dazza says:

@Ben: I’ve not run it on a MacBook but you should be fine. Your biggest problem will be memory. It might be tough to run VMWare with enough memory if your MacBook only has 1Gb, I’d go for 2Gb.

    Good luck

  11. Ben says:

thanks for your fast answer but i m asking myself if the graphic card of the macbook will support the 3D of PKR ?
    Any advice welcolme

    Thanks

  12. dazza says:

@Ben: That’s a good point. You need to turn the Gfx on PKR down to run it under VMWare anyway so the MacBook may be pushing it. It does run fine on my MacBookPro… it’s hard to tell how much 3D work the card is doing or is VMWare using the CPU to emulate a DirectX card?

  13. Boaz says:

I used to be able to run pkr easily on vmware until i installed a new version of XP. Now when i launch PKR in my virtual machine (it works fine when launched in stand alone windows mode)i get the following:

Could not initialize client – cant create a D3D device — 205530516, -2005530528 (render Init) (Render Init)

Ive downloaded the latest version of direct and am in the process of updating windows.

any ideas why this might not be wroking anymore? Something missing in Vmware fusion perhaps?

    appreciate any help,

    cheers,

    Boaz

  14. staff says:

how do you set min spec mode, I run vista on fusion – 2gh

  15. dazza says:

@staff. I stopped playing PKR a while ago but it used to be the case that there was a ‘Run Min Spec’ icon in the start menu.

  16. Eric says:

I have tried and tried and tried and still cannot get PKR to run with fusion. I have download Direct X 9, I have change the resolution and have checked accelerated 3 D graphics. I have a macbook pro and don’t have any other problems running other windows software with fusion…….can anyone help??

  17. crocop says:

ok,but which resolution settings are correct?

  18. FreeFelix says:

Yea am having the same issue : Could not initialize client – cant create a D3D device — 205530516, -2005530528 (render Init) (Render Init)

Running Parallels – what are the correct display settings – its been mentioned above?
Would be great not to have to go thro bootcamp which is a pain

I have an iMac latest with 4gb Ram

  19. Will says:

Is there a petition or anything for getting pkr on the mac?

  20. dazza says:

@Will afaik there isn’t a petition and tbh I don’t think they would port it anyway. There are so few mac users in Europe and they have bigger problems I think.

  21. scratchoum says:

Is there really someone who have it really working on his macbookpro ?? Please tell us your resolution details under win and mac and all the config necessary pleazzzze

  22. Staffan says:

WILL: Yes there is a petition,

    http://pkrmac.epetitions.net/

This is so irritating, PKR also seem to have gone from working on it to ignoring it.

I could almost open it in fusion, but after upgrading fusion to 2.0 I get the same message as FreeFelix.

    Any suggestions?

  23. Matt says:

Mac users don’t bother as pkr told me just then that they have more priorities to make themselves money than FINALLY after lying to mac users for years get it out on mac. In other words these turds are money hungry pricks.

PKR stands for Proper King Rats

Liers!! Even after some of us have been loyal to pkr on pc, we all finally wake up to the mac revolution and you continue to bullshit about getting a mac version. Pathetic.

  24. Tom says:

    Hello
I have trouble with PKR on MAC.
I use the new MacBook with a 2,4 G Processor and 4 GB RAM.
I install Virtual Box from Sun and Win XP SP3.
The install of PRK is successful.
The Grafic at VM Ware can customized to 128MB.
If I run PKR i recieve de Grafic error message: Could not initialize client – Cant create a D3D device – -2005530516, -2005530518 (Render Init) (Render Init).

    What is the problem?
Help me please. PRK didn’t support me.

  25. Leojersey says:

I have been checking the pkr options for mac (OS X 10.5.5). Am so desperate to play other sites other than full tilt.

Was pretty confident with maybe purchasing Fussion, and needed to check on the type of Windows (xp or vista) was the better option…. but after reading the above not sure buying both fussion and windows is really worth it!

Can anyone re-’instill’ my confidence…. what is the most cheapest and sufficient method?

    Leo

  26. dazza says:

All I can say is that I am running the latest PKR (version 1.65) on VMWare Fusion 2.0.1 on a MacPro with 2Gb of RAM and OS X 10.5.5. I play it in ‘Low Detail’ mode.

To be honest if you can’t get PKR to run easily it’s just not worth persisting with it. They aren’t going to listen to your support calls and they aren’t going to do an OS X port unless 100,000 OS X users turn up with cash to play tables (which trust me isn’t going to happen).

  27. Highart says:

    Hello everybody

i make a partition with bootcamp and install windows xp home with sp3. than i download pkr and it runs very well. i am so happy.

  28. Latif says:

Hi all… new to using a mac so just tried to download PKR and realised its only for windows… talked to them and they actually gave me the link to this page but did not recommend as it crashes but say that there is nothing in the works to develop for Mac users.
So what is all this business about partitioning? cant I just download the VMware and get going?
    Help a novice!!
thanks for anything you can offer!

  29. dazza says:

If PKR is working on VMWare at the moment (I don’t know if it does though) you can just install VMWare and it should just work. The partition stuff is to do with running off of a Bootcamp partition. You don’t_need_ to have a bootcamp partition though.

  30. dazza says:

I’ve written an shaort update and created a short video of my settings for VMWare and PKR here http://www.luckydonkey.com/2009/03/29/update-pkr-on-vmware/

At this moment in time PKR IS working on VMWare

  31. Slava says:

Hi ive got a brand new mac 13inch core duo 2, and ive tried dling the install.exe and when i run it i just get a notepas document saying a bunch of numbers, wat could/should i do to get it to work?? thx

  32. dazza says:

Slava: you have got VMWare, it sounds like you are running the pkrinstall.exe inside OS X. You need to run it in windows.

  33. Sacha Varma says:

Dude how did you manage to become PKR tech support? Blogs are evil!

  34. Fire says:
